Being Original is a Challenge

It has been a few months since I last posted. During that time I have been busy.I have been learning new things and developing my skills during this time. I still have a long way to go, but now it is time to start pulling out the projects that have been collecting dust, and start back to work.

It sounds simple enough, but over the past few months my expectations have changed. Most of my previous work was derivative, taking things and concepts that I had seen in the real world and applying them to Second Life. During the past few months, I have been inspired by the words of others to not just replicate the real world in Second Life, but to go beyond that and create something new and original.

Therein lies the challenge. How do you make something new and original? The challenge can seem daunting especially when the source material has been presented in a similar form numerous times. One of the projects that I am working on is a series of machinima depicting the four seasons in Second Life. A couple of weeks ago, I finally found a good version of Vivaldi's "Four Seasons" licensed under a Creative Commons license.

The question is what to do with it. I have been planning a series of machinimas based on the "Four Seasons" for months now, but my ideas were were the standard music video type machinima. However, I have decided that I want to do something more, to use it to tell a story set in Second Life. There are thousands of music videos and slide shows on YouTube set to this music, the challenge will be to come up with something that people have not seen hundreds of times.

It is easy to copy the work of others. Being original is a challenge.
